Security Deposit 101: How to Get Yours Back – Tips for Move-Out Success

Moving out of your apartment? Your security deposit is likely one of your top concerns. Standard Property Management wants to help ensure you get it back in full! Here’s what you need to know to make your move-out process smooth and stress-free.

1. Review Your Lease Agreement

Your lease outlines the conditions for receiving your full security deposit. Check for move-out requirements, cleaning expectations, and any specific maintenance responsibilities.

2. Give Proper Notice

Leases require a written notice before moving out—60 days in advance. Failing to provide proper notice could result in losing a portion of your deposit.

3. Repair Any Damage

Normal wear and tear is expected, but excessive damage (holes in walls, broken fixtures, or stains on carpets) could result in deductions. Patch up holes, replace light bulbs, and ensure appliances are in working order before your final inspection.

4. Deep Clean Your Apartment

A thorough cleaning can make all the difference. Pay special attention to these areas:

  • Kitchen: Clean appliances, wipe down cabinets, and scrub the sink.

  • Bathrooms: Remove soap scum, clean mirrors, and sanitize surfaces.

  • Floors & Walls: Sweep, vacuum, and remove any scuff marks.

  • Windows & Fixtures: Wipe down windows, blinds, and light fixtures.

5. Take Photos Before You Leave

Before handing in your keys, take timestamped photos of the entire unit. This serves as proof of the apartment’s condition in case of any disputes.

6. Schedule a Walk-Through Inspection

SPM offers a pre-move-out inspection. Attending this walk-through allows you to address any concerns before final charges are assessed.

7. Return Your Keys on Time

Failure to return all keys, fobs, or garage openers could result in extra fees. Hand them in according to your lease instructions to avoid unexpected deductions.

8. Provide a Forwarding Address

Make sure your landlord has a way to send your security deposit refund. Provide a forwarding address and follow up if necessary.

By following these steps, you’ll set yourself up for a hassle-free move and maximize the chances of receiving your full security deposit back. Have questions about moving out? Standard Property Management is here to help!
